A Message from the Honourable Gary Mar, Minister of Community Development
Alberta’s centennial year is now behind us. While the celebrations are officially over, I hope you have made some fond memories of Alberta’s 100th birthday. I will personally never forget the tremendous pride, creativity and energy Albertans put into making the past year such a success.
In communities across the province, Albertans organized community events, created fantastic tributes to their province and took time to honour one another showcasing why Alberta such a great place to call home. While there were dozens of provincially led centennial initiatives and celebrations, it was the grassroots efforts thousands of Albertans that truly made it the celebration of the century. Without the assistance of local organizers and armies of volunteers, major events like the Royal Visit and the provincewide birthday party on September 1st would not have been possible.
There is no doubt that my memories of the centennial will be a source of pride for many years to come. Memories are not all that remains of Alberta’s centennial. The provincial government chose to mark the province’s milestone by leaving lasting legacies for future generations. From new public facilities to scholarships and works of art, reminders of Alberta’s centennial will be with us for many years to come.
Alberta is beginning its second century proud, prosperous and unwaveringly optimistic. It is clear from Albertans actions during the centennial that we have a great deal to look forward to.
