Albertans Recognized for Contributions to Sport and Recreation

One hundred influential Albertans will receive the Alberta Centennial Salute for Sport and Recreation for their outstanding contributions to the development of sport and recreation in the province.

As a one-time award, the salute was established to identify, honour and celebrate 100 Albertans for their outstanding contributions during the province’s first 100 years. It was created by the Alberta government and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation (ASRPWF).

Recipients were chosen from communities across the province and each has had a tremendous impact on the lives of others through their involvement. Represented in categories such as athlete, coach, builder and leader, recipients include Mark Tewksbury, Perky McCullough, Clare Drake, Margaret Southern, Ron MacLean and Art Quinney.

A volunteer selection committee composed of sport and recreation stakeholders and representatives from the ASRPWF selected the recipients from nominations received from Albertans, community organizations, and sport and recreation associations. Selections were based on contributions to the development of sport or recreation, how their efforts affected their organization or community, and how the individual benefited from their involvement.

Recipients will be recognized as a group during a luncheon on December 8 in Red Deer. They will also receive special recognition at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum
